Blunthead Wrasse (Thalassoma amblycephalum) is a hardy and colorful species that brings bold striping and constant motion to larger aquariums. Juveniles often show a yellowish body with a dark ocellus at the dorsal fin base, while adults transform into striking patterns of green, blue, and red with the characteristic “blunt” head shape. This species can reach about 7 inches in adult size and thrives in aquariums of at least 125 gallons, with wide swimming areas, rocky shelters, sandy substrate, and a secure lid since wrasses are jumpers. Semi-aggressive by nature, they do best with other large and active fish, making them well-suited for FOWLR systems, though they may nip or prey on small invertebrates. Their diet should be protein-rich and varied, including mysis, brine shrimp, krill, clams, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet blends to maintain health, energy, and vibrant coloration.
