Rainbow Basslet (Liopropoma fasciatum) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking multicolored pattern—red, yellow, orange and sometimes blue stripes—compact yet slightly more visible behavior compared to many basslets.
Males typically display brighter, more saturated colors and may defend a favored hiding spot or small territory, while females/juveniles are a bit paler and more cautious, spending more time tucked into rockwork.
They reach about 5 to 6 inches (12–15 cm) in ideal conditions and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons to allow for stable conditions and ample territory.
Provide lots of live rock with caves, overhangs, and crevices, plus moderate open swimming space. Use a secure lid, because basslets can jump when startled. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–78 °F, pH ~8.1–8.4.
Diet should consist of meaty carnivorous fare such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or live foods. Small feedings several times a day are ideal.
With proper care, the Rainbow Basslet can become a vivid and charismatic centerpiece in a mature reef setting.
