Raccoon Butterflyfish

Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, distinctive black "mask" over the eyes, vibrant yellow and white body, and unique crescent-shaped patterns. Males typically have slightly more intense coloration and may exhibit territorial behavior, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and less vividly colored. They reach about 8 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons. Provide a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots, moderate open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since many butterflyfish species are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of a mix of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets or flakes formulated for marine omnivores. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium.
