Quoy's Parrotfish

The Quoy's Parrotfish (Scarus quoyi) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant turquoise and green coloration, striking patterns, robust size, and unique beak-like mouth used for grazing algae.

Males typically display more intense, iridescent coloration with bright blue-green bodies, purple to pink accents, and bold facial markings, while females/juveniles are duller in color, often showing a mix of greens and browns with subtle highlights, gradually transforming into vivid adult patterns as they mature.

They reach about 16–18 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 200 gallons or more. Provide ample live rock for grazing, open swimming space, a sandbed, and secure hiding spots, along with a tight lid since they are known to jump.

Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Diet should consist of a mix of marine algae, nori sheets, spirulina, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and herbivore blends to ensure both their nutritional and grazing needs are met. With proper care, this fish makes a vibrant, active, and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
