Queensland Combtooth Blenny

Queensland Combtooth Blenny (Ecsenius mandibularis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender body, striking series of dark spots along its flanks, unique comb-like dentition, and active, inquisitive behavior.

Males typically display slightly larger size, more vivid coloration, and increased territorial displays, while females/juveniles are smaller with subtler markings. They reach about 3 to 4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots, a sandbed, and secure rockwork with crevices, as they enjoy perching and darting for cover. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a tight-fitting lid is necessary since many blennies are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist of algae (film and macro), spirulina-based pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and other high-quality prepared foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and charming addition to a reef or peaceful community aquarium, often perching in view and adding personality to the tank.
