The Pygmy Ring-Eye (Trimma benjamini) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its tiny size, translucent body with vivid reddish-orange markings, and the distinctive ring-like pattern around its eyes. Males typically display slightly brighter coloration and may exhibit territorial behavior during courtship, while females/juveniles are more subtly colored and tend to be more reclusive.
They reach about 1.2 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 5–10 gallons, making them ideal for nano or pico reef tanks. Provide plenty of live rock with small crevices for hiding, along with low-flow areas and open micro-swimming spaces. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as even small gobies are capable of jumping when startled.
Diet should consist of very small foods such as copepods, rotifers, baby brine shrimp, enriched mysis, and micro-pellets. With proper care and a peaceful tank environment, this goby makes a colorful and fascinating micro-species addition to well-maintained reef systems.
