Pygmy Leatherjacket Filefish

The Pygmy Leatherjacket Filefish (Brachaluteres jacksonianus) is a peaceful species that is generally reef-safe with caution. It is admired for its unique rounded body, variable coloration ranging from pale yellow-brown to dark green with stripes or spots, and its ability to inflate its abdomen.

Males often display vibrant blue spots on their tail and dorsal fins during courtship, while females and juveniles are more subdued in color. This species reaches up to 3.5 inches (9 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (114 liters).

Its habitat should include live rock for hiding, open swimming spaces, and a fine sandbed, along with a secure lid since it is prone to jumping. Stable water parameters are important, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH of 8.1–8.4.

 The Pygmy Leatherjacket Filefish is omnivorous, accepting a diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, algae, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, this small and striking fish makes a standout addition to a marine aquarium.
