Purplemouth Moray Eel

The Purplemouth Moray Eel (Gymnothorax vicinus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, striking brown coloration with a purple-hued mouth interior, and unique predatory behavior.

Males typically display slightly bulkier heads with stronger jawlines, while females/juveniles tend to be more slender in build. They reach about 28–30 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots, a sandy substrate, and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential since this species is prone to escaping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as silversides, shrimp, squid, clam, and other marine-based fare, offered with tongs to avoid accidental bites. With proper care, this eel becomes a standout display species in a large marine aquarium, bringing both beauty and personality to the setup.
