Purple Reef Chromis

The Purple Reef Chromis (Chromis scotti) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant violet-blue coloration, shimmering scales, and active schooling behavior. Males typically display slightly brighter hues and may become territorial during spawning, while females and juveniles are smaller, with more subdued coloration. They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger if keeping a group).

Provide ample live rock for shelter, open swimming space, and a sandbed, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since these fish can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this hardy and striking chromis makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, especially in groups where their schooling behavior can truly shine.
