Purple Firefish

The Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant coloration with striking gradients of purple, pink, and white, elongated dorsal fin, and darting, energetic swimming behavior. Its bold colors and graceful movements make it a visually captivating addition to reef aquariums.

Males typically grow slightly larger and display more intense coloration along the dorsal and caudal fins, while females and juveniles are smaller with slightly paler colors but maintain the characteristic vibrant dorsal fin. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed, plenty of live rock for hiding spots, and open swimming areas. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is strongly recommended since firefish are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality micro-pellets. With proper care, the Purple Firefish makes a striking and active centerpiece in reef aquariums, delighting observers with its darting and hovering behavior.
