Purple Carpet Anemone

The Purple Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla sp.). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant purple coloration, large disc-like body, and symbiotic relationship with clownfish.

Males and females are not visually distinguishable; instead, juveniles tend to be smaller and lighter in color, while mature adults develop larger, fuller discs and more intense coloration. They can reach about 12–24 inches across and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75–100 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed or rubble substrate for attachment, ample live rock for stability, and moderate open space for expansion. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4), and ensure strong lighting and moderate to high flow, as this species thrives in reef-like conditions.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, and occasional marine pellets, though they also derive nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic zooxanthellae. With proper care, this anemone makes a striking centerpiece in the aquarium and can host certain species of clownfish, adding both color and activity.
