Port Jackson Shark

My species/animal is a fish — Port Jackson Shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) — a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive saddle-like markings, spiny dorsal fins, unique blunt head with crests above the eyes, and moderate size.

Males typically develop thicker claspers near the pelvic fins and may show slightly more robust body proportions, while females/juveniles tend to have smoother bodies with less pronounced features and more uniform coloration. They reach about 42 to 50 inches (3.5 to 4.2 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 300 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed for resting, ample live rock for hiding spots, and open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many shark species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, squid, clams, and high-quality pellets designed for carnivorous marine species, and with proper care, this shark makes a standout and fascinating addition to a large marine aquarium.
