Pinnatus Batfish

Pinnatus Batfish (Platax pinnatus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution as juveniles may occasionally nip at soft corals and zoanthids, while adults are generally well-behaved around most invertebrates. This stunning species displays a tall, disc-shaped dark body with brilliant orange to red trim outlining the fins and body edges, creating one of the most striking color combinations in the batfish family, plus dramatically elongated dorsal and anal fins that make juveniles appear almost triangular. The vibrant orange banding gradually fades with age as adults develop more subdued coloration but retain their impressive stature. It can reach about 18 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 150 gallons or more due to their size and active swimming nature, with plenty of open water column space, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and special attention to water quality as this species can be more sensitive than other batfish during acclimation. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped fish, marine worms—as well as high-quality marine pellets and vegetable matter, though this species can be finicky during initial acclimation and may require live foods and extra patience to establish reliable feeding patterns.
