Pin‑Stripe Reef Basslet (Liopropoma susumi) is a semi‑aggressive species that is reef‑safe with caution, admired for its cream or pale body overlaid with thin red horizontal pin‑stripes, its small size, and shy, cryptic behavior.
Males typically display stronger striping and may defend small territories around caves or overhangs, while females/juveniles are paler and more reclusive.
They reach about 4 inches (≈ 10 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide live rock with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding, along with moderate open swimming space. Use a secure lid, since basslets can be prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020‑1.026, temperature ~72‑79°F, pH ~8.1‑8.4.
Diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high‑quality frozen/fresh fare. Feeding multiple small meals per day helps maintain health and coloration.
With proper care, the Pin‑Stripe Reef Basslet is a standout choice for mature reef aquariums, especially for those who enjoy more elusive and beautifully patterned species.
