Pictus Blenny

The Pictus Blenny (Ecsenius pictus) is a peaceful, reef-safe species admired for its slender body, golden facial markings, and striking striped patterning. Reaching about 4 inches in length, this hardy blenny is well suited for aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. Males often display slightly brighter coloration and territorial behavior during breeding, while females and juveniles remain smaller with more subdued hues.

Best kept in tanks with plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and some open swimming space, the Pictus Blenny also requires a secure lid as they are known jumpers. Stable water parameters are key to long-term health, with salinity between 1.020–1.025, temperature ranging from 72–79°F, and pH around 8.1–8.4. Their diet should be varied, including algae, spirulina, marine pellets, and occasional meaty offerings such as mysis, brine shrimp, and copepods.

With its unique coloration, manageable size, and peaceful temperament, the Pictus Blenny makes a standout addition to both reef and community aquariums.
