Pictus Anglerfish, Tangerine Dream

The Pictus Anglerfish, Tangerine Dream (Antennarius pictus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant orange coloration, wart-like texture, unique lure used to ambush prey, and exceptional camouflage abilities.

Males typically are smaller and more elusive, often less vibrant in color, while females/juveniles are larger, more robust, and tend to display brighter, more dramatic coloration such as the striking "Tangerine Dream" variation. They reach about 4–5 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock and hiding spots to mimic their ambush-hunting environment, along with low flow and minimal open swimming space, as they prefer perching. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid, as they are prone to jumping or lunging during feeding.

Diet should consist of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped squid, and small feeder fish; they can often be trained to accept frozen alternatives with patience. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium, both for its exotic appearance and fascinating hunting behavior.
