Pictilis Anthias
(Pseudanthias pictilis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant coloration, active swimming behavior, and relatively larger size compared to other anthias. Males typically display vivid magenta and orange hues with yellow accents and a prominent, elongated body shape that makes them a bold visual centerpiece, while females/juveniles are more slender and usually exhibit softer shades of pink or peach with less intense coloration and smaller finnage. They reach about 5 to 6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons, especially when kept in small harems.

Provide open swimming space, ample live rock for shelter, and multiple hiding spots to reduce aggression, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since this species may jump when startled or during territorial disputes. Diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or flakes offered multiple times per day. With proper care, this colorful and dynamic fish makes a standout addition to larger, well-maintained reef aquariums.
