Pearlfish

Pearlfish (Carapus bermudensis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated, slender body, translucent silvery coloration, and unique symbiotic behavior of living inside sea cucumbers or other invertebrates.

Males typically are slightly larger and may display more vibrant silvery hues during breeding periods, while females and juveniles are smaller and more translucent with subtler coloration.

They reach about 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, given their size and active swimming nature.

Provide a fine sandbed with plenty of live rock for hiding spots and crevices, as well as open swimming space. Because Pearlfish can jump, a secure lid is essential.

Maintain stable water parameters: Salinity ~1.020–1.025 Temperature ~72–79°F pH ~8.1–8.4

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood, with occasional pellets or flakes.

With proper care, the Pearlfish makes a fascinating and unique addition to large marine aquariums, especially valued for its unusual lifestyle and slender, elegant appearance.
