Peacock Razor Wrasse

Peacock Razor Wrasse (Xyrichthys pavo) is a truly unique and eye-catching species, easily identified by its elongated, laterally compressed body and the sharp sloping “razor” forehead typical of the genus. Its name comes from the brilliant iridescent patterning across its body, with shades of green, blue, and pink accented by delicate striping that glimmers like a peacock’s feathers under aquarium lighting. This species can reach about 12 inches in length and requires a large aquarium of at least 180 gallons, with a deep fine sandbed (for burying at night or when startled), abundant live rock for cover, and wide open swimming space. A secure lid is essential, as razor wrasses are strong jumpers. Generally peaceful but active, they are reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates, though they should be housed with other robust fish to avoid being bullied. Their diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood, offered in multiple daily feedings to match their natural foraging style.
