Peacock Mantis Shrimp

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its brilliant coloration, intricate patterns, and uniquely powerful raptorial claws used for smashing prey.

Males typically display more vivid coloration and slightly larger claws, while females/juveniles are slightly smaller and less intensely colored but equally fascinating in behavior. They reach about 6–7 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a deep sandbed, sturdy live rock structures for burrowing, hiding spots, and some open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping or escaping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans, and with proper care, this invertebrate makes a standout, eye-catching addition to the aquarium.
