Panther Grouper

The Panther Grouper (Cromileptis altivelis) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking white body patterned with large black spots reminiscent of a panther, its graceful elongated fins, and impressive size. Males are generally slightly smaller and more streamlined, often with elongated fins, while females and juveniles tend to be larger with more pronounced spot patterns and high-contrast coloration. This species can reach up to approximately 24 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 250 gallons to allow ample swimming space. A proper tank setup includes a sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots or caves, and open swimming areas, along with a secure lid to prevent jumping. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH ranging from 8.1–8.4. The Panther Grouper is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, small fish, and high-quality marine pellets. With proper care, this striking and majestic fish makes a standout centerpiece in any large marine aquarium.
