Panda Triplebar Goatfish

Panda Triplebar Goatfish (Parupeneus crassilabris) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, as it may consume small ornamental shrimp and crabs but poses no threat to corals or larger invertebrates. This distinctive goatfish displays a creamy white to pale yellow body marked with three bold black vertical bars, including a prominent eye bar that creates a panda-like facial pattern, along with the characteristic twin barbels used for actively foraging through sand and rockwork in search of small invertebrates and detritus. The striking black and white contrast and busy hunting behavior make it both a visual standout and constant source of activity. It can reach about 8-10 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 100 gallons or more due to their active swimming and foraging nature, with a sand bed for natural hunting behavior, stable water parameters, and peaceful tankmates, though they appreciate having both open swimming areas and rocky hiding spots. Its diet should include a mix of meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, marine pellets—along with small live foods like blackworms or ghost shrimp, as this carnivorous species requires frequent feeding throughout the day to satisfy their active metabolism and natural foraging instincts.
