Pacific Creolefish

The Pacific Creolefish (Paranthias colonus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its sleek, torpedo-shaped body, vibrant reddish to purplish coloration, scattered white spots, and active, open-water swimming behavior. Males typically display deeper coloration and may grow slightly larger, while females/juveniles have a more muted tone with less distinct markings. They reach about 12 to 14 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 250 gallons, as they are strong, active swimmers that require significant open space.

Provide ample open swimming space, some live rock for cover, and strong water movement, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since this species can jump when startled. Diet should consist of meaty offerings like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, high-protein pellets, and occasionally live foods. With proper care and space, this fish makes a bold, schooling centerpiece species for large, predator-friendly or fish-only marine systems.
