Oval Chromis

The Oval Chromis (Chromis ovalis) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its silvery-blue oval body, subtle iridescence, and active schooling behavior. Males typically display brighter coloration and may become more territorial during breeding, while females and juveniles are slightly smaller, with more subdued tones.

They reach about 5 inches (12–13 cm) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons, especially if kept in small groups. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots and plenty of open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many Chromis species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods) and high-quality marine pellets or flakes, along with some algae-based foods to balance nutrition. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and active addition to reef aquariums, adding both movement and shimmer to the display.
