Oreni Tilefish

The Oreni Tilefish (Hoplolatilus oreni) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant lavender to bluish body, yellow head markings, graceful swimming, and unique darting behavior. Males typically are slightly larger with more intense coloration and may exhibit subtle territorial behaviors, while females/juveniles are more slender with less pronounced colors.

They reach about 6 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons, though larger systems are preferred due to their active swimming nature. Provide a deep sandbed (for burrowing), ample live rock for hiding, and open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and ensure a secure, tight-fitting lid, as tilefish are notoriously skilled jumpers, especially when startled.

Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, enriched frozen preparations, and small sinking pellets. With proper care and a stress-free environment, this elegant fish makes a stunning and active addition to the reef or fish-only aquarium.
