Orbicular Batfish

Orbicular Batfish (Platax orbicularis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution as juveniles may occasionally nip at soft corals and large polyp stony corals, while adults are generally well-behaved around most invertebrates. This classic species displays a tall, circular silver body with distinctive black vertical banding that becomes more subdued with age, plus dramatically elongated dorsal and anal fins that create an elegant, disc-like silhouette reminiscent of a living dinner plate. Juveniles exhibit more pronounced banding and different proportions, while adults develop a more refined appearance with subtle golden hues. It can reach about 24 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 200 gallons or more due to their substantial size and active swimming nature, with plenty of open water column space, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and consideration for their peaceful temperament that makes them excellent community fish with similarly-sized tank mates. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped fish, squid—as well as high-quality marine pellets and vegetable matter, as this omnivorous species benefits from varied nutrition including marine algae, nori sheets, and spirulina-enriched foods.
