The Orangespotted Goby (Nes longus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking orange spots along a slender, pale body, symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, and burrowing behavior. Males typically exhibit slightly more vivid coloration and may be more active in maintaining the shared burrow with their shrimp partner, while females/juveniles are similar in appearance but may be slightly smaller and less bold in behavior.
They reach about 4 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons. Provide a deep sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for hiding, and maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as gobies are known jumpers.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped marine foods, copepods, and high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium, especially when paired with a compatible pistol shrimp for a fascinating display of natural symbiosis.
