Orangespotted Filefish

The Fish Orangespotted Filefish (Cantherhines pullus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking orange-spotted pattern, unique body shape, and gentle demeanor.

Males typically exhibit slightly larger size, more pronounced coloration, and extended dorsal and anal fin rays, while females and juveniles are generally smaller, with subtler coloration and more rounded fins. They reach about 7–9 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots, along with open swimming space and maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as filefish are known jumpers.

Their diet should consist of a varied mix of frozen mysis and brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and marine algae, which supports their health and enhances their coloration. With proper care, the Orangespotted Filefish becomes a unique and eye-catching addition to any marine aquarium.
