Orange Tree Sponge

The Orange Tree Sponge (Axinella sp.) is a peaceful, reef-safe species admired for its vibrant orange coloration, branching tree-like structure, and unique texture that adds visual interest to any aquarium. Unlike many animals, sponges do not show distinct male or female forms; juveniles appear as smaller developing branches, while adults grow into larger, robust structures reaching about 8–12 inches in height.

They should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and moderate to strong water flow. Providing live rock or other firm surfaces for attachment, open swimming space around the sponge, and a secure lid ensures both health and safety.

As filter feeders, their diet consists of suspended planktonic foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and specialized sponge foods.
