Orange Spotted Goby w/ Pistol Shrimp

The Orange Spotted Goby w/ Pistol Shrimp (Amblyeleotris guttata) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its white body covered in bright orange spots, striking dorsal fin, and its fascinating symbiotic partnership with pistol shrimp. This pair is highly sought after for the unique behaviors they display, as the goby acts as a lookout while the shrimp digs and maintains their shared burrow.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may develop more intense coloration, while females and juveniles remain smaller and less vividly marked. They reach about 4–5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing, stable rock structures for cover, and open swimming space to encourage natural behavior. Stable water parameters are required (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is essential since gobies are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality sinking pellets. With proper care, this goby and pistol shrimp pair makes a captivating and functional addition to reef aquariums, combining beauty with fascinating behavior.
