My species/animal is a fish, the Orange Spotted Dottyback (Pseudochromis marshallensis). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant yellow to orange body accented with small orange-red spots, streamlined shape, and active swimming behavior. Native to the Marshall Islands, this dottyback is a colorful and energetic addition to many marine aquariums.
Males typically are slightly larger, bolder in coloration, and exhibit more territorial behavior, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller with less intense spotting and more reserved behavior. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, though larger tanks are better for reducing territorial aggression.
Provide ample live rock with caves and hiding spots to allow for territory establishment, along with open swimming areas. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and always use a secure lid, as dottybacks are known jumpers.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or frozen marine foods. With proper care, this fish makes a visually striking and hardy addition to the aquarium, especially for intermediate to experienced marine aquarists.
