Orange Spot Filefish

The Fish Orange Spot Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its vibrant orange-spotted blue-green coloration, slender elongated body, and specialized feeding behavior.

Males typically display brighter coloration with more vivid orange spots and may develop slightly elongated dorsal fins, while females and juveniles have subtler coloring and more rounded fins. They reach about 4.5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with plenty of hiding spots and natural grazing surfaces, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Their diet should consist primarily of natural coral polyps, supplemented with enriched mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets, though they can be challenging to wean onto prepared foods. With proper care and a well-established tank, this fish makes a unique and striking addition to a marine aquarium.
