The Orange Furry Lobster (Palinurellus wieneckii) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bright orange coloration covered in fine hair-like setae giving it a ‘furry’ appearance, compact size, and distinctive antennae. Males typically have larger and more robust antennae and claws, while females and juveniles are slightly smaller with less pronounced features but maintain the characteristic furry texture. They reach about 4-5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate with plenty of live rock and hiding spots, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since many lobsters are prone to climbing or jumping. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and specialized pellets, and with proper care, this lobster makes a fascinating and colorful addition to the aquarium.
