The Orange Elephant Ear Sponge (Acanthella carteri on Scleractinia) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant orange coloration, broad ear-like shape, and unique filter-feeding behavior. Unlike fish, this sponge does not have distinct male/female differences in appearance—reproduction is usually by budding or fragmentation, though in the wild they may release reproductive cells into the water column.
They reach about 12–18 inches across when mature and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons to provide adequate space and stable water quality. Provide ample live rock for attachment, good water flow, and shaded areas since sponges often thrive in lower light conditions. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4).
Diet should consist of phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, and dissolved organic matter carried in the water column—they rely on strong currents to filter fine particles rather than direct feeding like fish or corals. Do not expose to air, as air bubbles can damage internal structures.
With proper placement and care, this sponge makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, adding striking natural beauty and enhancing biodiversity.
