Orange Body Filefish

The Orange Body Filefish (Pervagor melanocephalus) is a mostly peaceful species that is not reef-safe, as it may nip at corals and invertebrates. It is admired for its striking orange body, dark head, unique body shape, and distinctive caudal fin patterns.

Males typically display more vibrant coloration, while females and juveniles have a more subdued appearance. This species reaches up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (114 liters).

The tank should include ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots, as well as open swimming space, with a secure lid since these fish are prone to jumping. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH of 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of a variety of foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, algae-based foods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, the Orange Body Filefish makes a standout and captivating addition to the aquarium.
