The Ocellated Electric Stingray (Diplobatis ommata) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its distinctive ocellated (eye-like) spots across the dorsal surface, small compact body, and its unique ability to generate electric discharges for defense. This fascinating species is sought after by advanced aquarists for its unusual patterns and behavior. Males typically have smaller, more slender bodies and develop claspers near their pelvic fins, while females and juveniles are broader-bodied, more robust, and grow steadily with age.

They reach about 12–14 inches in total length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 150–200 gallons, with ample bottom space for resting and swimming. A deep fine sandbed is essential to prevent abrasions, along with open swimming areas and some hiding spots for comfort. Stable water parameters are crucial, with salinity at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is important, as stingrays may attempt to jump or climb the tank walls.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped squid or fish, and other meaty marine foods. With proper care, the Ocellated Electric Stingray becomes a rare and captivating centerpiece, offering both unique appearance and intriguing behavior for experienced marine aquarists.
