Nursalim Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus nursalim) is one of the rarest flasher wrasses in existence, discovered only in 2008 around the Bird’s Head Peninsula of western New Guinea and parts of Indonesia, and almost never seen in the aquarium trade — owning one means owning a piece of reef-history. Males reach only about 4-inches, females even smaller, but what they lack in size they more than make up for in color: males show vibrant orange-yellow bodies, long filamented dorsal rays for display, striking rectangular black patches (one near the caudal peduncle, another under the dorsal fin), a lunate (strongly curved) tail, deep red anal fin edged in blue, and delicate blue striping on the head and flanks; females and juveniles are much more subdued, with rounded tails and faint stripes. Best kept in aquariums of at least 30-40 gallons with deep live rock structure, rubble slopes, open swimming space, stable reef water conditions (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temperature ~75-82°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), plenty of hiding places, and a tight lid since flashers are notorious escape artists. Diet must be meaty and frequent — high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, supplemented with enriched small marine preparations. With careful care and patience, the payoff is enormous: this wrasse is a showpiece that very few hobbyists ever get to see, much less own.
