New Caledonia Sunrise Anthias

The New Caledonia Sunrise Anthias (Pyronotanthias timanoa) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant sunrise-like coloration, small size, graceful swimming motion, and rarity in the aquarium trade. Males typically display vibrant gradients of orange, pink, and yellow with elongated dorsal and ventral fin extensions, making them a true showpiece fish. Females/juveniles are smaller and display more muted tones, often lacking the dramatic fin extensions seen in dominant males. They reach about 2.5–3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40 gallons, preferably larger when kept in groups.

Provide plenty of live rock for hiding, open mid-water swimming space, and a secure lid since many anthias species are prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters with a salinity of ~1.020–1.025, temperature of ~72–79°F, and pH of ~8.1–8.4.

Diet should consist of small, meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality micro pellets, offered multiple times per day to meet their high metabolic needs. With proper care, this rare and stunning anthias species makes a standout and rewarding addition to a peaceful reef aquarium.
