The Neon Japanese Anemone (Halcurias carlgreni). It is generally considered a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its intense neon coloration, striking tentacle glow under actinic/blue light, and unique flower-like appearance.

Males typically cannot be visually distinguished from females (sexing is nearly impossible in most anemones, as they reproduce via both sexual and asexual means), while juveniles are smaller, less vibrant, and gradually develop their full neon coloration with maturity.

They reach about 4–6 inches across when fully expanded and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger is preferred for stability). Provide a mature live rock system with crevices for their foot to attach, moderate sandbed or rubble for security, and stable moderate flow with strong lighting. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is not as critical as for fish, but stable placement is needed since they may wander until settled.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and occasionally enriched frozen preparations. While they can derive much of their energy from their symbiotic zooxanthellae under strong reef lighting, supplemental target feeding enhances growth and coloration.

With proper care, this anemone makes a stunning centerpiece in the aquarium, glowing brilliantly under reef lights and adding rare beauty to a well-established reef system.
