Naso Tang

Naso Tang (Naso lituratus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing and zooplankton feeding. This elegant species displays a gray to olive body with distinctive bright orange to yellow lips that create a striking facial accent, plus streamlined fins with yellow highlights and the characteristic forward-projecting horn (rostrum) that develops with maturity. The vibrant orange lips against the subdued body coloration make it instantly recognizable and one of the most popular naso tangs in the aquarium trade. It can reach about 18 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 180 gallons or more due to their substantial size and active swimming nature, with plenty of open water column space, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and consideration for their generally peaceful temperament that makes them excellent community fish for large systems with other non-aggressive species. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed—as well as high-quality herbivore pellets, mysis shrimp, and zooplankton, as this species benefits from both plant and animal proteins and requires varied nutrition including regular feeding of meaty foods to supplement their natural plankton consumption and maintain their vibrant orange lip coloration.
