The Narrow-Lined Pufferfish (Arothron manilensis) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its pale body adorned with distinct dark horizontal stripes, a prominent black spot near the pectoral fin, its unique rounded shape, and engaging behavior.
Males and females look similar, with no significant sexual dimorphism, while juveniles typically inhabit seagrass beds and mangrove areas before moving to reef flats as they mature. This species reaches up to 12.5 inches (31 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons (380 liters). They require a well-structured environment with a sandy substrate, live rock for hiding spots, caves or crevices, and open swimming space.
Stable water parameters should be maintained with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature between 74–79°F (23–26°C), and pH 8.1–8.4, along with a secure lid to prevent jumping. Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as snails, clams, squid, krill, and hard-shelled shrimp, which also help wear down their continuously growing teeth. With proper care, the Narrow-Lined Pufferfish makes a fascinating and standout addition to a marine aquarium.
