Multicolored Crocea Clam

The Multicolored Crocea Clam (Tridacna crocea) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its vibrant and varied mantle coloration—ranging from electric blues and purples to greens and golds—along with intricate patterns and a compact, oval-shaped shell ideal for nano to medium reef tanks.

Males typically display brighter, more concentrated coloration with slightly smaller growth, while females/juveniles may exhibit softer tones and faster initial shell development. They reach about 4 to 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a stable piece of live rock or clam cradle for attachment (as Crocea clams prefer to burrow and anchor themselves), strong lighting (such as high-output LED or metal halide) to support photosynthesis, and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). While they don’t jump, a secure lid helps maintain a stable environment and protects tankmates.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthetic energy via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, but juveniles may benefit from supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or marine snow. With proper lighting and care, this clam makes a stunning and colorful centerpiece in any reef aquarium.
