Multi Spine Damsefish

The Multi Spine Damselfish (Neoglyphidodon polyacanthus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking transition in coloration from bright, electric blue juveniles to more muted gray, black, or brownish adults with bold markings.

Males typically become larger, more territorial, and intensify their colors during breeding, while females/juveniles remain smaller and display brighter, more vivid blue tones.

They reach about 6–7 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons, with larger tanks recommended if keeping multiple damselfish or housing them with other semi-aggressive species.Provide plenty of live rock for hiding spots and territories, along with open swimming space, a stable sandbed, and secure lid since they may dart quickly if startled.

Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4.Their diet should consist of a variety of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae or seaweed sheets.

With proper care, this hardy fish makes a standout addition for experienced aquarists, though its changing coloration and territorial nature mean it’s best suited for community tanks with equally robust tankmates.
