Mudskipper

The Mudskipper (Periophthalmus sp.) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its amphibious lifestyle, ability to climb and walk on land with its pectoral fins, bulging eyes, and fascinating behavior at the land–water interface. Males typically grow larger, show more vivid coloration, and may display territorial or courtship behaviors such as “skipping” displays and raising dorsal fins, while females/juveniles remain smaller with less intense coloration and subtler markings. They reach about 6–8 inches depending on species and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons for smaller species, or 55+ gallons for larger ones.

Provide a brackish setup with a sandy substrate, rocks or driftwood for climbing, partially submerged structures, and open space for both land and shallow water areas. Stable water parameters should be maintained (salinity ~1.010–1.025 depending on species, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is absolutely necessary, as mudskippers are exceptional jumpers and climbers. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, bloodworms, insects, small crustaceans, and occasionally pellets formulated for carnivorous fish. With proper care, this fish makes a unique and entertaining addition to specialized brackish aquariums, admired for its unusual behaviors and land–water interaction.
