The Mud Reef Goby (Exyrias belissimus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, sandy coloration with subtle patterning, and its adaptability to muddy or sandy reef habitats. Males typically grow slightly larger, may display more vibrant spotting or shading, and show more territorial or courtship behavior, while females/juveniles remain smaller and have softer, less pronounced markings. They reach about 6 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40 gallons.
Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for shelter, and moderate open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is strongly recommended, as gobies can jump when startled. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or frozen marine foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and interesting addition to larger aquariums, valued for its natural behavior and peaceful disposition.
