Mottled Spinefoot

Mottled Spinefoot (Siganus fuscescens) is a peaceful species that is completely reef-safe, making it an excellent choice for mixed reef systems as it poses no threat to corals or invertebrates while focusing primarily on algae grazing. This subtly beautiful rabbitfish displays a brownish-gray to olive base coloration with intricate mottled patterns of darker and lighter patches creating excellent natural camouflage, complemented by the characteristic rabbit-like face and constantly working mouth used for continuous algae consumption. The complex mottled patterning and diligent grazing behavior make it both an understated natural beauty and highly effective algae controller that blends seamlessly with reef environments. It can reach about 8-10 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 100 gallons or more due to their active swimming and foraging nature, with plenty of live rock for algae growth and natural camouflage opportunities, stable water parameters, and careful handling around their venomous dorsal spines, though they're generally very peaceful and often develop engaging personalities with their keepers. Its diet should focus heavily on marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, quality herbivore pellets—with occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter for optimal health and will provide excellent nuisance algae control while maintaining their natural mottled camouflage patterns.
