The Mottled Sea Hare (Aplysia fasciata) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking dark mottled coloration with reddish or purplish tones, soft body, and large wing-like parapodia. This species is especially noted for its ability to release a purple ink when threatened, a fascinating defense mechanism.
Males typically behave the same as females since this is a hermaphroditic species, capable of acting as either male or female during reproduction. Juveniles are smaller and less vividly colored, but still display the characteristic mottled patterns.
They reach about 12–16 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75–100 gallons, depending on size. Provide a soft sandbed, ample live rock with algae growth, and open swimming space, as well as stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as sea hares are known to climb out or move vigorously around the tank.
The diet should consist mainly of algae (macroalgae and microalgae), seaweed sheets, and live rock with natural growth. Supplement feeding with nori or other marine vegetable matter to ensure they thrive.With proper care, this fascinating invertebrate makes a unique and functional addition to the aquarium, both for its unusual appearance and its natural grazing on nuisance algae.

On request, we also send photos/videos after arrival at IA. Some species are import-to-order (3-10 business days). Many common species are already cleared or near the end of QT.
Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
