Monster Shrimp Goby

The Monster Shrimp Goby (Tomiyamichthys oni) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its elongated body, spotted and striped patterns, and its fascinating symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. Males typically grow slightly larger, may display bolder markings, and show more territorial or courtship behaviors, while females/juveniles are smaller, with subtler coloration and patterns. They reach about 5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing, live rock for caves and hiding spots, and moderate open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is important, as gobies are known to jump when startled. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or frozen preparations. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, both for its beauty and its interesting shrimp-goby partnership behavior.
