Mombasae Lionfish (Pterois mombasae) is an aggressive predatory species that is not reef-safe as it will consume any fish, shrimp, or crab small enough to fit in its mouth. This spectacular predator displays vibrant red, orange, and white vertical stripes across its elongated body with extraordinarily long, flowing pectoral fins that extend like ornate banners and venomous dorsal spines creating a truly majestic appearance. Distinguished by its more slender build and exceptionally elongated fin rays compared to other volitan-type lionfish, this species is considered one of the most elegant and graceful of all lionfish. It can reach about 12-14 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 120 gallons or more, with plenty of open swimming space to accommodate its sweeping fins, gentle to moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and extreme caution around the venomous spines which deliver potent stings requiring immediate medical attention. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—whole fish, large shrimp, crabs, squid strips—as well as marine pellets once acclimated, though this species often shows strong preference for live prey and may be more challenging to wean onto prepared foods.
