Mitratus Butterflyfish

Mitratus Butterflyfish (Chaetodon mitratus) is a peaceful species that is generally reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant golden-yellow body, bold black band across the eyes, and striking black patch near the tail. Its contrasting coloration and rarity make it a prized collector’s fish among marine aquarists.

Males typically grow slightly larger and show deeper coloration with more pronounced black markings, while females/juveniles remain smaller with lighter, less intense patterns. They reach about 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75–90 gallons, offering both room to swim and plenty of hiding spaces.

Provide a setup with live rock, caves, and hiding spots along with open swimming space for comfort and security. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and ensure a secure lid, as they may dart quickly if startled.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, marine algae, and high-quality pellets. Over time, they may also graze on natural growths and sponges within the aquarium. With proper care, the Mitratus Butterflyfish makes a rare, vibrant, and standout addition to any advanced marine display.
